Extra space for 200 cars near Kek Lok Si Temple

VISITORS to the Air Itam market and Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang can expect smoother traffic with additional parking space in the area.

Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai said the owner of a plot of private land in Jalan Pasar (opposite RHB Bank), had agreed to open up the land, which can accommodate up to 200 cars.

He also said that the Kek Lok Si Temple car park at the foot of the hill could also accommodate about 200 cars and some 10 coach buses.

“We can’t guarantee there will be no traffic congestion but we believe traffic flow will be smoother with the additional parking spaces.

“The Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) also has some 50 parking spots in the area,” Wong said in a press conference at his service centre in Jalan Balik Pulau on Thursday.

Wong said the area was a hotspot for visitors.

“The market will be crowded from this week until the eve of Chinese New Year, while there will be a surge of visitors to the temple lasting the whole 15 days of the celebration,” he said.

Wong said the road widening projects in Lebuhraya Thean Teik and Jalan Masjid Negeri had also helped with the traffic flow in Air Itam.

Meanwhile, MPPP Financial Management Committee alternate chairman Joseph Ng, who was present during the press conference, reminded the public not to park their vehicles illegally.

He said enforcement officers on duty at tourist hotspots would clamp or tow away vehicles which obstruct traffic.

Owners of towed-away or clamped cars can call the MPPP hotline at 04-2291179 or the traffic police hotline at 04-2181872.
